This article explains how cPanel counts an "account", what you actually pay per year at different account counts, the add-on costs people forget, and how it compares with per-server pricing, so you can work out your own number. Prices change often, so always check cPanel's official pricing page before you decide.

2026 prices are from cPanel's pricing page; 2025 prices and the 1 January 2026 effective date are from webhosting.today's summary. Pro saw the largest rise, about 15%.
A few details worth knowing from the pricing page:
- Solo, Admin and Pro can be paid annually, about 8.4% cheaper: USD 27.46, 32.96 and 49.46 per month respectively when billed yearly. Premier is billed monthly only.
- Dedicated (metal) servers can only use Premier. Even with ten customers on a physical server, the floor is USD 69.99/month.
- cPanel also sells WP Squared, a separate product for managed WordPress hosting, at USD 84.99/month for 10 WordPress sites plus USD 0.40 per extra site.
How does cPanel count accounts?
cPanel's FAQ defines an account as a cPanel user account that manages websites, files, domains and email. That has a few consequences:
- Accounts, not domains. One account with several addon domains still counts once.
- WHM reseller accounts count as accounts too.
- Every customer is an account, so the licence grows steadily with your customer base. That has been the model since 2019, when cPanel moved from a flat per-server licence to account-based pricing; many hosts notified customers that the change took effect on 1 September 2019.
If the server holds accounts nobody uses any more, clean them up, and ask your licence provider how suspended accounts are counted.
cPanel license cost 2026 by account count
Direct prices, billed monthly, excluding VAT:
| Accounts | Tier | USD/month | USD/year | USD per account per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Solo | 29.99 | 359.88 | 29.99 |
| 5 | Admin | 35.99 | 431.88 | 7.20 |
| 30 | Pro | 53.99 | 647.88 | 1.80 |
| 100 | Premier | 69.99 | 839.88 | 0.70 |
| 200 | Premier + 100 × 0.49 | 118.99 | 1,427.88 | 0.59 |
| 500 | Premier + 400 × 0.49 | 265.99 | 3,191.88 | 0.53 |
Two things stand out:
- For a single-customer VPS, the licence often costs as much as the VPS itself or more. Paying close to USD 30/month in licence for one small site is what pushes many people to look elsewhere.
- For shared hosting, the cost grows linearly. Every new customer adds USD 0.49/month. At 500 accounts that is about USD 3,192 a year for one server, and it moves with every cPanel price change.
If you are setting your own prices, see how to put the licence into your cost base in how to price hosting plans.
Add-on costs people forget
The cPanel licence is only part of the bill. A shared hosting server on cPanel commonly adds:
- CloudLinux, for per-account CPU, RAM and process limits, which cPanel does not enforce on its own. At the time of writing, CloudLinux's pricing page lists USD 7/month for the 1-account tier, USD 12 for 5 accounts and USD 18 for unlimited accounts on one server (cheaper with more servers).
- Other paid add-ons depending on your needs: backup tools, security tools, app installers. Each has its own price list; put them all in the spreadsheet before you compare.
- Operations time: updates, monitoring, incidents. That exists with any panel, but belongs in the calculation.
Example: a 200-account server on cPanel Premier with CloudLinux's unlimited tier pays about 118.99 + 18 = USD 136.99/month in licences, about USD 1,644 a year at current list prices.
Where to buy a cheaper cPanel license
cPanel sells through a partner network. Data centres and VPS providers that are partners often resell licences below list price, sometimes bundled into the VPS price. Partner prices also rise with cPanel's adjustments and vary from one provider to another, so ask for a quote and read the overage terms carefully.
How does cPanel compare with other panels?
At the time of writing (October 2026), from each vendor's pricing page:
| Panel | Pricing model | List price |
|---|---|---|
| cPanel | Per account | USD 29.99 to 69.99/month, plus USD 0.49 per account above 100 |
| DirectAdmin | Account tiers | Personal Plus USD 5 (2 accounts), Lite USD 15 (10 accounts), Standard USD 29/month (unlimited) |
| Plesk | Per number of domains | VPS: Web Admin about EUR 12 (10 domains), Web Pro about EUR 18 (30), Web Host about EUR 31/month (unlimited) |
| ZoPanel | Per server | Free (3 accounts, 10 websites, 10 databases); Pro USD 49/year, unlimited websites on one server |
Plesk prices vary by region and licence type; the figures above are the VPS prices shown on Plesk's pricing page. Check every vendor's current pricing, ours included.
When is cPanel still worth it?
To be fair, cPanel has real strengths:
- The largest ecosystem: plugins, integrations, documentation, and many technicians who already know it.
- Customer familiarity. In some markets, "comes with cPanel" is a selling point.
- Long-standing billing integrations with WHMCS and others.
- Few, high-value accounts: if each customer pays a lot, a few dollars of licence per account hardly matters.
If those matter more to you than cost, cPanel remains a reasonable choice. We go through the selection criteria in choosing a cPanel alternative in 2026.
Per-server pricing: the ZoPanel approach
ZoPanel is priced per server, not per account:
- Free: 3 hosting accounts, 10 websites and 10 databases, no time limit; everything works except resellers, S3 backups and API tokens (S3 storage is limited to one bucket).
- Pro: USD 49/year, unlimited websites on one server, plus resellers, S3 backups, the API and billing modules.
- Lifetime: USD 199 one-time, a launch offer.
For the 200-account server above, five years of cPanel Premier at today's prices is about USD 7,139 (before any future increases), against USD 245 for five years of ZoPanel Pro, or USD 199 for Lifetime. Per-account resource limits are built in through systemd sandboxes, with nothing extra to buy. See pricing and licensing.
The limits, honestly stated: ZoPanel runs only on Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 and Debian 12/13 (x86-64 and ARM64), installs on a fresh server, and has a much younger ecosystem than cPanel.
If you decide to move, Migrate in imports cPanel backups (cpmove-USER.tar.gz) directly: websites, databases, mailboxes, cron jobs, SSL certificates and, when the DNS server is installed, DNS zones, keeping passwords where the hash format allows. A whole server can be moved over SSH. See the migration docs and our guide to migrating from cPanel to a VPS.
Conclusion
The cPanel license cost in 2026 makes sense for servers with a few high-value accounts and for teams that need the biggest ecosystem. For single-customer VPSs and dense shared hosting, per-account pricing climbs quickly and has been raised many times. Build a five-year cost sheet with your real account counts, add CloudLinux and add-ons, and compare it with a per-server option.
The quickest comparison is a real one: install ZoPanel's Free plan on a test VPS and import a few real cPanel backups.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a cPanel license in 2026?
Direct list prices: Solo USD 29.99/month (1 account), Admin USD 35.99 (5 accounts), Pro USD 53.99 (30 accounts), Premier USD 69.99 (100 accounts), plus USD 0.49 per account above 100. Prices exclude VAT and may differ through partners.
Can I use cPanel Solo or Admin on a dedicated server?
No. According to cPanel's pricing page, Solo, Admin and Pro are for Cloud/VPS only. Physical servers can only buy Premier, starting at USD 69.99/month.
Do reseller accounts count toward the cPanel account total?
Yes. cPanel states that WHM reseller accounts count as an account, just like any other cPanel account.
How can I reduce my cPanel license cost?
Buying through a partner or your VPS provider is often cheaper than list price, annual billing saves about 8.4% on Solo, Admin and Pro, and removing unused accounts lowers the count. If the cost still does not fit your business model, consider a panel priced per server.
When did cPanel switch to per-account pricing?
In 2019. cPanel announced account-based pricing in mid-2019, and many hosts told customers the change took effect on 1 September 2019. Prices have been raised several times since, most recently from 1 January 2026.
