RunCloud alternative without a monthly fee per server
Looking for a RunCloud alternative? Compare RunCloud, Ploi and ServerAvatar with self-hosted panels over 3 years, and learn how to move your sites off.

Key takeaways
- RunCloud, Ploi, ServerAvatar and SpinupWP are subscription services that manage your VPS through an agent or connection, and you pay them on top of the VPS.
- Over 3 years, self-hosted panels are cheapest on one server, while SaaS plans with many servers per subscription can cost less at 5 to 20 servers.
- With a SaaS manager, the panel lives outside your server: if the subscription ends, management, SSL renewal and backups depend on their terms.
- Moving off RunCloud means building a fresh server with the new panel and copying files, databases and DNS site by site.
The main RunCloud alternatives fall into two groups: other SaaS server managers such as Ploi, ServerAvatar and SpinupWP, which you still pay every month or year, and self-hosted control panels such as CloudPanel, HestiaCP and ZoPanel, which run on the server itself and are free or licensed once per server. A self-hosted panel removes the dependency on someone else's dashboard and is the cheapest option on one or two servers. On 5 to 20 servers, some SaaS plans actually cost less in licence fees, so the decision is about control and features as much as price.
This article explains how these services work, compares 3-year costs with the formulas shown, lists what a self-hosted panel does not give you, and walks through moving sites off RunCloud.
What RunCloud, Ploi, ServerAvatar and SpinupWP are
These tools are server management as a service. You rent a VPS from DigitalOcean, Vultr, Hetzner or a local provider, connect it to the service's web dashboard, and the service installs and configures the web stack for you. The dashboard itself runs on the vendor's infrastructure, not on your server.
RunCloud is a typical example. You install its agent with a script run as root on a fresh Ubuntu server, and the server must allow port 34210 for the agent, according to RunCloud's install requirements. The same page says the server must be "a fresh instance with no pre-existing software on it" and lists Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04 and 24.04.
Ploi, ServerAvatar and SpinupWP follow the same model with different focuses: Ploi is popular with Laravel and PHP developers, ServerAvatar targets agencies managing many client servers, and SpinupWP is built around WordPress.
What they do well
To be fair, the model has real advantages:
- No panel to maintain. The vendor updates the dashboard. You do not patch or back up the panel itself.
- A polished interface. These dashboards are mature and pleasant to use, with Git deployment, staging and team roles on most plans.
- One place for many servers. You see every server, at every VPS provider, in one dashboard.
- Nothing extra running on the server beyond the agent and the web stack.
Where they cost you
- A recurring fee per server or per server bundle, on top of the VPS. It never stops while you use the service.
- Dependency on their SaaS. If the vendor has an outage, changes prices or you stop paying, managing your server becomes harder. RunCloud's terms of service say that after cancellation the RunCloud agent, which manages the Nginx/OLS services, "will be promptly deactivated" and that "SSL certificate renewal services will be disabled immediately after the cancellation". Its locked account page says sites keep running, but you cannot manage them from the dashboard, renew Let's Encrypt certificates or create new backups.
- Third-party access. A root-level agent connected to an outside service is a trust decision. Your servers are only as safe as the vendor's account security and infrastructure.
Prices at the time of writing (October 2026)
All prices below are in USD, exclude VAT and were read from each vendor's pricing page in October 2026. They change often, so check before you buy.
| Service | Plan | Servers included | Monthly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RunCloud | Essentials | 1 | $9 | $90 |
| RunCloud | Professional | 50 | $19 | $190 |
| RunCloud | Business | 100 | $49 | $490 |
| Ploi | Free | 1 (1 site) | $0 | $0 |
| Ploi | Basic | 5 | $10 | $108 |
| Ploi | Pro | 10 | $16 | $172.80 |
| Ploi | Unlimited | Unlimited | $36 | $388.80 |
| ServerAvatar | Newbie | 5 | $12 | $90 |
| ServerAvatar | Pro | 25 | $29 | $217 |
| ServerAvatar | Master | 50 | $49 | $367 |
| SpinupWP | Essentials | 1 | $12 | Not listed |
Two notes. ServerAvatar's yearly prices were shown as discounted from a regular $120 (Newbie) and $290 (Pro), and its first month is discounted too. RunCloud's Essentials plan covers one server, so a second server means a higher plan. Features also differ by plan: RunCloud lists its ModSecurity web application firewall and its API only from the Business plan.
On the self-hosted side, CloudPanel describes itself as "free software", HestiaCP is free and open source (GPLv3), and ZoPanel has a Free plan (3 hosting accounts, 10 websites, 10 databases per server, no time limit) and Pro at $49 a year or $199 once (lifetime), one licence per server, with unlimited websites (pricing).
3-year total cost for 1, 5 and 20 servers
The table uses yearly billing and the cheapest plan that covers the number of servers. The formula is 3 × yearly price of that plan for subscriptions and number of servers × licence price for per-server licences. VPS costs are left out because they are the same in every column.
| Option | 1 server | 5 servers | 20 servers |
|---|---|---|---|
| RunCloud | 3 × $90 = $270 (Essentials) | 3 × $190 = $570 (Professional) | 3 × $190 = $570 (Professional) |
| Ploi | 3 × $108 = $324 (Basic; Free if 1 site) | 3 × $108 = $324 (Basic) | 3 × $388.80 = $1,166.40 (Unlimited) |
| ServerAvatar | 3 × $90 = $270 (Newbie) | 3 × $90 = $270 (Newbie) | 3 × $217 = $651 (Pro) |
| CloudPanel | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| HestiaCP | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| ZoPanel Free (within its limits) | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| ZoPanel Pro yearly | 3 × $49 = $147 | 5 × 3 × $49 = $735 | 20 × 3 × $49 = $2,940 |
| ZoPanel Pro lifetime | 1 × $199 = $199 | 5 × $199 = $995 | 20 × $199 = $3,980 |
Read this honestly:
- On one server, a self-hosted panel costs less than any of the subscriptions, and ZoPanel's lifetime licence passes RunCloud Essentials ($90 a year) in the third year.
- On 5 and 20 servers, the bundled SaaS plans are cheaper in licence fees than ZoPanel Pro. If cost per server is your only criterion and you do not need mail, DNS or hosting accounts, a SaaS plan or a free panel wins.
- Beyond 3 years, subscriptions keep adding up while a lifetime licence does not. Free panels stay free but come with their own trade-offs below.
- ZoPanel Free covers small servers fully. If each server runs up to 10 websites for up to 3 accounts, you pay nothing; only Pro features such as reseller accounts, API tokens and remote S3 backups need a licence.
What the money buys also differs. ZoPanel includes an email server, DNS (PowerDNS with DNSSEC), hosting accounts with their own Linux user, PHP-FPM pool and CPU and memory limits, and reseller accounts on Pro. These matter if you sell hosting to customers, much less if you deploy your own Laravel apps.
What self-hosted panels lack
Moving from a SaaS manager to a self-hosted panel has costs that are not in the price table:
| SaaS manager gives you | Self-hosted panel |
|---|---|
| A central dashboard hosted by the vendor | Each server has its own panel, unless the panel has multi-server tools |
| Panel updates done for you | You update the panel (ZoPanel does it with signed updates and automatic rollback) |
| Connect a server from any provider in minutes | You install the panel on each fresh server |
| Team seats across all servers | Users are managed per server |
CloudPanel and HestiaCP are built to manage the server they run on, not to give you one vendor-style dashboard for many servers.
ZoPanel has a fleet feature that covers part of the gap (fleet docs). One of your ZoPanel servers acts as the controller and shows the status of the others (online state, CPU, RAM, disk, websites, accounts). From it you can sign in to any server with one click through a one-time link, create hosting accounts on another server, move websites with their databases between servers, and place new accounts automatically on the server with the most room when one is full. Each server keeps serving websites even if the controller is down. It is still a panel you host yourself, not a vendor dashboard, and each server needs its own licence. See multi-server management for an overview.
How to migrate off RunCloud
RunCloud requires a fresh server and so does ZoPanel (requirements), so you do not convert a RunCloud server in place. You build a new server next to it, copy each site, test, and switch DNS. ZoPanel imports cPanel and DirectAdmin backups directly, but not RunCloud backups, so this is a manual, site-by-site move.
Step 1: Inventory each server
For every web application, note the domain, PHP version, database name and user, cron jobs, custom Nginx rules, environment files and the system user that owns the files. Collect them from the dashboard and from the server itself. Lower the DNS TTL to 300 seconds a day before the move.
Step 2: Build the new server
Rent a VPS (Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12/13 recommended) and install the panel:
curl -fsSL https://get.zopanel.net | sudo bash
Create a hosting account, then a website for each domain with the same PHP version.
Step 3: Copy files and databases
On the old server, dump each database and archive each application:
mysqldump --single-transaction -u USER -p DBNAME | gzip > app.sql.gz
tar -czf app-files.tar.gz -C /path/to/app .
Upload the files to the new website over SFTP, restore the dump into a new database, and update wp-config.php or .env with the new database name, user and password. For larger sites, rsync over SSH is faster.
Step 4: Recreate what lived in the dashboard
Cron jobs, redirects, custom Nginx snippets, Git deployment and environment variables were stored by RunCloud, not in your app. Recreate them in the new panel. If sites relied on RunCloud's server-side caching (its plans list NGINX FastCGI and Redis full-page cache), turn on the new panel's page cache instead.
Step 5: Test and switch DNS
Test each site through your computer's hosts file, then point the A record to the new IP. The certificate is issued once the domain resolves to the new server. Keep the old server for a few days before you cancel the subscription and delete it at your VPS provider. Our guide to migrating a website without downtime covers the DNS timing in detail.
Which RunCloud alternative fits you
| Your situation | Good fit |
|---|---|
| Many servers, own apps, no mail or customers | Ploi or ServerAvatar (cheaper per server at scale) |
| WordPress sites only, prefer a hosted dashboard | SpinupWP |
| One or two servers, want no subscription | CloudPanel, HestiaCP or ZoPanel |
| Selling hosting with mail, DNS, resellers and billing | ZoPanel (HestiaCP if you need no reseller accounts) |
| Want privilege separation inside the panel | ZoPanel (see why a panel should not run as root) |

Conclusion
The best RunCloud alternative depends on what you are optimising. If you manage many servers for your own apps, another SaaS plan may cost less than any per-server licence. If you want to stop paying a monthly fee for each server, keep the panel on your own machine and get mail, DNS and hosting accounts, a self-hosted panel is the better fit. Try it on one server first: ZoPanel's Free plan runs 3 hosting accounts, 10 websites and 10 databases with no time limit, enough to move a few sites and compare.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to RunCloud?
Yes. CloudPanel and HestiaCP are free self-hosted panels, Ploi has a Free plan for 1 server with 1 site, and ZoPanel's Free plan covers 3 hosting accounts and 10 websites per server. Self-hosted options run on your server, so you keep managing them if you stop paying anyone.
What happens to my sites if I cancel RunCloud?
According to RunCloud's terms, the agent is deactivated and SSL renewal is disabled after cancellation. The websites themselves stay on your server, but their Let's Encrypt certificates will expire unless you renew them another way. Move the sites or set up renewal before you cancel.
Is RunCloud cheaper than a self-hosted panel?
On one server, no: RunCloud Essentials is $90 a year, while CloudPanel and HestiaCP are free and ZoPanel Pro is $49 a year. On 5 to 50 servers, RunCloud Professional at $190 a year costs less than per-server licences, though it does not include things like a mail server or hosting accounts for customers.
Can ZoPanel import RunCloud backups?
No. ZoPanel imports cPanel and DirectAdmin backups. From RunCloud you copy files and databases yourself and recreate cron jobs, redirects and settings, following the steps above.
Can I manage several servers from one ZoPanel?
Yes, with the fleet feature. One ZoPanel server becomes the controller, shows the health of the others, signs you in to each with one click, creates accounts on them and moves websites between them. Each server still needs its own licence and keeps running on its own.
