## Key takeaways

- Among the panels compared, only aaPanel and ZoPanel sell a lifetime licence today; cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin and RunCloud are subscriptions.
- Over five years on one server, list prices range from USD 199 (ZoPanel lifetime) to about USD 4,199 (cPanel Premier at 100 accounts).
- A lifetime licence pays off only if the vendor keeps shipping updates and supporting new operating systems for longer than the break-even point.
- Read what lifetime covers: updates, support, server moves and what happens if the vendor changes course.

A lifetime license control panel costs more up front and nothing after, so it beats a subscription once you pass the break-even year, usually year three to five. Among the panels in this article, only aaPanel (USD 699 list) and ZoPanel (USD 199) sell a lifetime licence today; cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin and RunCloud are subscriptions. The real risk is not price but continuity: a lifetime licence is only worth something while the vendor keeps releasing updates and supporting new operating systems.

This article puts five years of licence cost side by side, with the formula for each line, then lists what to check before you pay once. We make ZoPanel and sell a lifetime licence, so we have an interest; we include the risks that apply to us too. Prices are list prices **at the time of writing (October 2026)**, in USD, before VAT.

Some notes to read the table fairly:

- **The plans are not equivalent.** RunCloud is a hosted server manager without a mail server or hosting accounts. DirectAdmin Personal Plus allows 2 accounts. cPanel Solo is one account. Pick the row that matches what you actually run.
- **Yearly billing lowers some subscriptions.** cPanel Solo, Admin and Pro are about 8.4% cheaper when paid yearly (Solo: 27.46 × 60 = USD 1,647.60). DirectAdmin offers bulk discounts from a prepaid balance.
- **Promotions move the lifetime numbers.** aaPanel's pricing page lists Pro lifetime at USD 699 while a banner advertises USD 399 for an anniversary sale. ZoPanel's USD 199 lifetime is a launch offer.
- **Free tiers exist.** aaPanel's core is free, and ZoPanel Free runs 3 accounts and 10 websites with no time limit. If you fit inside a free tier, the cheapest licence is none.
- **Subscription prices rise.** cPanel and Plesk both raised prices on 1 January 2026. The five-year figures above assume no further increases, which history does not support.

## Where lifetime breaks even

The break-even point is the lifetime price divided by the yearly price:

| Panel | Lifetime | Yearly | Break-even |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| aaPanel Pro | 699 | 198 | about 3.5 years |
| aaPanel Pro (sale price) | 399 | 198 | about 2 years |
| ZoPanel Pro | 199 | 49 | about 4.1 years |

If you expect to run the server longer than the break-even point, and the vendor is still shipping updates by then, lifetime wins. If you might switch panels, consolidate servers or close the business within that time, the yearly plan is cheaper and more flexible. On ZoPanel, a yearly licence that ends simply returns the server to the Free limits; nothing is deleted ([licensing docs](/docs/licensing)).

## What "lifetime" actually covers

"Lifetime" is a marketing word. Read the terms for these five points.

### 1. Whose lifetime?

A lifetime licence lasts as long as the product, not as long as you. ZoPanel's [EULA](/legal/eula) says lifetime licences "include every update for as long as ZoPanel exists". That is honest and also the core risk: if a vendor stops development, a lifetime licence keeps the software running but stops the updates. For a control panel that faces the internet, a panel without security updates has to be replaced.

### 2. Updates, and for how long

Some lifetime deals include only a limited update period. DirectAdmin is the well-known case: it [stopped selling lifetime licences in August 2019](https://www.yourwebhoster.eu/?p=3836), and that article describes lifetime licences that included one year of updates, with a yearly fee for updates after that. Existing licences stayed valid. Check whether "lifetime" means lifetime updates, or a lifetime right to run one version.

aaPanel's pricing page lists "continuous Pro feature updates" for its lifetime plan. ZoPanel's covers every update.

### 3. New operating systems

Your OS reaches end of life long before a lifetime licence does. Ubuntu LTS and Debian releases come out every two years or so, and a panel has to support each one. A lifetime licence is only useful if the vendor ports the panel to the next release. Before buying, look at how quickly the vendor added the current releases. ZoPanel supports Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 and 26.04 and Debian 12 and 13 ([requirements](/docs/requirements)).

### 4. Support

Lifetime rarely means lifetime support. ZoPanel's lifetime licence includes priority support for the first year. aaPanel lists "long-term priority support benefits". Ask what support costs after year one, and whether security fixes depend on it.

### 5. Moving servers

Servers get replaced. ZoPanel licences are bound to one server at a time and can be moved from your customer account three times a year. aaPanel binds a licence to one IP address and allows 10 IP changes by default. A lifetime licence you cannot move is worth only as much as the server it sits on.

## Subscription risks are real too

Subscriptions are not risk-free either:

- **Price increases.** cPanel moved to per-account pricing in 2019 and has raised prices several times since. Plesk's pricing page announced a revised renewal structure from 2026.
- **Dependency on the vendor's service.** With a hosted manager such as RunCloud, the dashboard lives on the vendor's side. RunCloud's [terms](https://runcloud.io/legal/tos) say that after cancellation the agent is deactivated and SSL certificate renewal is disabled. Our [RunCloud alternative guide](/blog/runcloud-alternative) covers what that means in practice.
- **What happens on expiry.** Panels differ. aaPanel Pro features keep running after expiry, but you cannot configure them until you renew. ZoPanel falls back to the Free limits and keeps every site, database and mailbox.

## A checklist before you pay once

| Question | Good answer |
| --- | --- |
| Does lifetime include all future updates? | Yes, written in the licence terms |
| How long has the vendor shipped regular releases? | Years, with a public changelog |
| Does it support the newest Ubuntu and Debian LTS? | Yes, or a stated plan |
| Can I move the licence to a new server myself? | Yes, a few times a year |
| What support is included after year one? | Stated clearly, with a price |
| Is there a refund window? | ZoPanel: 14 days on the first purchase; aaPanel: 15 days |
| What happens if I stop paying a yearly plan? | Sites keep running; only limits change |

## Who should choose which

- **Choose lifetime** for servers you plan to keep for four or more years, from a vendor whose release history you trust, and when the up-front price fits your cash flow.
- **Choose a subscription** when you are testing, when servers come and go, or when you need the vendor's ongoing support as part of the deal.
- **Choose a free tier** when it fits. Many single-site VPSs need no paid licence at all; see our list of [the best free hosting control panels](/blog/best-free-hosting-control-panel).

For the per-account side of this question, see [per-account vs per-server panel pricing](/blog/panel-license-cost-calculator).

## Conclusion

Over five years, a lifetime licence is the cheapest way to run a paid panel on one server, as long as the vendor keeps it updated and ported to new operating systems. Subscriptions cost more but let you leave at any time. Whichever you choose, read what "lifetime" covers before you pay. ZoPanel's [Free plan](/pricing) runs 3 accounts and 10 websites with no time limit, so you can judge the release pace and support before deciding between USD 49 a year and USD 199 once.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a lifetime control panel licence worth it?

It is if you keep the server longer than the break-even point (about four years for ZoPanel, three and a half for aaPanel at list price) and the vendor keeps releasing updates. If you might switch panels sooner, a yearly plan costs less.

### Does a lifetime licence include updates?

It depends on the vendor. ZoPanel's lifetime licence includes every update for as long as ZoPanel exists, and aaPanel's includes continuous Pro feature updates. Older DirectAdmin lifetime licences included only one year of updates. Check the licence terms.

### Does cPanel offer a lifetime licence?

Not on its pricing page. cPanel sells monthly licences priced by account count, with yearly billing on the Solo, Admin and Pro tiers.

### What happens to a lifetime licence if the company closes?

The software usually keeps running, but updates and licence moves stop. For an internet-facing control panel, that means planning a migration. This is the main risk of any lifetime deal.

### Can I move a lifetime licence to a new server?

With ZoPanel, yes: three moves a year from your customer account, more through support. aaPanel allows 10 IP changes by default. Ask any vendor before buying.
